Phonics is a FOUNDATIONAL LITERACY SKILL that focuses on the correspondence between letters (graphemes) and their sounds (phonemes). Through phonics practice online and in-class, with a mix of activities and instruction, students learn letter-sound relationships in order to successfully decode (read) and encode (spell) words.
They then learn how to blend the sounds to make the words they are reading or writing.
For example, if a child knows the sounds for t, p, a and s, they can build up the words "tap", "pat", "pats", "taps" and "sat".
The teaching of phonics aims to build children's speaking and listening skills as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.
